solid, so it was hard work - the body was a bit sore the next day but it was a lot of fun.” Charlie, who played tighthead prop, says “it was really good to be out with the guys” after helping out on the sideline week-in and week-out. He says they were fortunate that Wanderers were dominating the game, winning 53-5, giving them the chance to get on the field. “It was the coaches’ call. If the game had been close or they thought it could have been risky, they wouldn’t have put us on. “We also had to get the buy-in from the players. I think they enjoyed it as much as we did.” Matt, who played his last game for the Wanderers thirds about 14 years ago, says it was great to get on the field with his
brothers. Charlie and Arthur had played for a Wanderers under-18 side together but he had never been on the paddock with them until last Saturday. “It was good to get out there but it makes you realise you are getting older,” Matt says. Although he hadn’t played for over a decade, Matt’s fitness level was impressive. “I try to keep reasonably active which helped on Saturday. My wife runs marathons so I spend a lot of time biking alongside her when she’s training.” Team manager Frazer Lochhead says Arthur, who is based in Colorado and came over especially for the game, ended up playing 20 minutes after hooker Dan McLachlan went into the blood bin. “He went on with 20 to go and we just left him on there,” Frazer says.
“Then Charlie went on with 10 minutes to play and Matt went on a minute later. “It was something special for everybody and they all thoroughly enjoyed it. Taylors Contracting do so much for the club and Charlie does so much for the team - he’s there at every training and trains with the boys and doesn’t miss a game.” Frazer says the club had been planning the Taylor brothers on-field reunion for the last year and it was organised after Arthur confirmed he was keen to come back for the game. Frazer says the strong links between Wanderers and Renwick helped make the big day a success. Charlie says the game was a good dress rehearsal for next weekend when he will play for the Wanderers Golden Oldies team in Reefton.

Upgrades will help stop Wakatu Estate flooding Simon Bloomberg Frustrating delays in the upgrade of stormwater drainage around flood-prone Champion Rd and Wakatu Estate may be soon be over with the Tasman District Council expected to approve spending another $574,858 on the project on Thursday. The Wakatu Estate industrial area and houses around Champion Rd were hit by floods in December 2011 and April 2013 leaving hundreds of properties and businesses under water. The TDC and Nelson City Council initiated a joint project to upgrade the Champion Rd culvert and Saxton Creek to improve the stormwater drainage in the area but so far nothing has happened, leaving residents and business owners frustrated and angry at the lack of action. But now the TDC has an opportunity to kick start the project if it agrees to make up a budget shortfall of $574,858. A report to council’s Engineering Services committee meeting on Thursday states that the money would be used to help pay for additional work on Nelson City land and compensation to a landowner for constructing the Champion Rd culvert on

Champion Rd resident Denise Smith says it’s good news that council is looking at finally starting the project although “it should have happened a long time ago”. “The first flood was the worst for us. We had water all through our garage and bedroom and our garden and drive were washed away but I felt sorry for our neighbours and the people in Wakatu Estate - they had it far worse.” Wakatu Estate business owner Brad Kelling of Brad’s Smash Repairs says he’s pleased the TDC is considering providing additional funding for the project but is highly critical of the lack of transparency in the process. He says the Nelson City Council held a public meeting on the project about a month ago but failed to notify businesses in Wakatu Estate.

Brad also considers that upgrading Saxton Creek will not fully resolve the stormwater drainage issues which he says have mainly been caused by the construction of Whakatu Drive. “Transit New Zealand essentially built a stopbank across the creek when they put in Whakatu Drive. Upgrading Saxton Creek and putting in new culverts won’t fix the problem.” TDC chief executive Lindsay McKenzie says he understands the residents’ frustration but the project was taking longer than expected because it was technically challenging, spanned across council boundaries and had been complicated by landowner issues. Lindsay says if the additional funding is approved, work on replacing the culverts could start “soon” with contractors, Donaldson Civil, ready to go.

Share Fair kicks off Hopefest in style Tasman population to boom Simon Bloomberg
The Hope Community Church’s Big Share Fair got even bigger on Saturday when around 1000 people swarmed into the church to snap up free food, toys, clothing, produce and vouchers. The Big Share Fair is the opening event of the week-long Hopefest, which started on Saturday, and will continue this week with a series of free activities and seminars at the church on Ranzau Rd. Thousands of items were given away at the fair which church member Julie Bay says was a great success. “It’s getting bigger every year,” Julie says. “There was a very large queue at the door when we opened at 9.30am so it was a great start. “The toys were really popular with the kids and all the furniture went quickly. All the produce and firewood went too and there was a long queue for the haircuts - it certainly showed it is more blessed to give than receive.” Sheree Higgins, who was one of the first through the door after lining up since 9am, says the fair is a “great idea” while another early bird Sharon Jones thought “it’s a really good idea and very generous of the church.” Stuart McAlister also thought the fair was a good idea after buying a top-line fish-
Nelson’s growth is forecast to slow over the next 30 years but Tasman is expected to boom, according to the latest state of the nation report released by the Salvation Army. Titled Mixed Fortunes, the report highlights several social issues and breaks it down by region. Of interest was the report’s forecast of population which shows Nelson growth will slow, increasing by just 2000 people to the year 2043 and at a rate of four per cent. The report says that will take Nelson’s population to 46,700 in 28 years. In Tasman it’s a different story. The current population of 48,700 will increase by 15 per cent over the next 28 years to 55,900. The total of New Zealand’s population over that time is expected to grow by 27 per cent, with Auckland expected to grow by a whopping 49 per cent over the next 30 years. Canterbury is expected to have a 30 per cent increase and Waikato a 22 per cent increase.

Gun pointed at bar patron: A man has been arrested after a customer of a Bridge St bar had a pistol pointed at him. Police located the offender and a subsequent search found he was in possession of an air gun (pistol), tomahawk and a tyre iron, along with cannabis. Earthquake strengthening of Richmond’s Town Hall will not affect the activities that operate inside it, says Sport Tasman. Sport Tasman will continue to operate from the building while part of it undergoes earthquake strengthening. Work is due to start in mid-July and is expected to cost $83,400 and will lift the building’s earthquake strength to 67 per cent.

Craft Potters is continuing its mission to foster the art and craft of pottery holding a series of classes through the winter including a four-week workshop with well-known Nelson potter Alan Ballard that started last week. Craft Potters was formed in 1973 by an enthusiastic group of potters attending classes at Nelson Polytechnic. It was the first organised potters’ group in Nelson and grew rapidly moving into its own premises at 202 Ranzau Rd in 1984. On Saturday, the group started the latest in a series of classes with Alan taking a “throwing” workshop that will run for the next three weekends. Although Craft Potters committee member Judi Salisbury says they are already holding Wednesday morning classes with Erika Aupperle, they are also running weekend and evening classes to attract more potential members. “Not everyone can come along to the morning classes so we have classes and workshops outside working hours now,” Judi says. “We wanted to attract younger members and people who are working.” Judi says the Tuesday evening classes with Kirsten Boswijk are proving popular while they had six people attend Alan’s first throwing workshop at the weekend. She says people can still attend one or more of Alan’s workshops that will be

Kirsten Boswijk also held a one-day course at Craft Potters earlier this month while the group held two Boredom Buster sessions for schoolchildren during the last school holidays. Committee member Rita Edgar says the Craft Potters courses, which can be attended by members and non-members, cover a range of techniques and skills and have been the starting point for a number of the Nelson region’s top pot-
ters. Craft Potters is also the only institution in the region to offer a Diploma in Ceramic Arts through the University of Otago. Bridie Henderson is one of their highest achieving graduates winning the premier New Zealand Portage awards for ceramics after finishing the Diploma in Ceramic Arts in 2011. Mapua’s Michael Potter and Golden Bay’s Sharon Trustrum also completed the diploma at Craft Potters. Craft Potters was also the starting point for Sandra Mead who says the pieces she created at the Ranzau Rd studio helped her gain entry into the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology’s Visual Arts degree course. Sandra is still a member of Craft Potters and often attends some of the courses. “I went along to Craft Potters and that sparked my interest in potting,” Sandra says. “Then I decided I wanted to do the visual arts degree at NMIT but I was 60 so I needed to submit some of my work to get into the course - I wouldn’t have got in without the skills I’d learned at Craft Potters.” Rita says Craft Potters has excellent facilities including 11 potting wheels, six kilns, glazes and stains, clay for sale and a gallery where works can be sold to the public. The Richmond mother of three received the $500 of mall vouchers, flowers from Bloom’ n Easy and a pamper package from Hair and Beauty Boutique, Ruby Tuesday, Ambrosia, Silver Moon and Hardy’s Health Store. Rosa, who regularly shops in the mall, says she had filled out her winning entry when she purchased a frypan in Stevens. “I couldn’t believe I had won - I don’t usually win anything,” Rosa says. “I’d already been given a new handbag and perfume for Mother’s Day so it’s lovely getting another present.” Rosa says she plans to spend most of the $500 of vouchers on her family but also “spend a little bit on myself ”. Richmond Mall manager Belinda de Clercq says the mall’s next promotion is Win a Family Weekend in Hanmer. People can fill out entry forms when they shop at participating stores from June 1-14 with the winner being drawn on June 15.

Wine and Food Festival helps out our community Eight community groups and organisations from around NelsonTasman got a welcome boost on Monday night when they received $18,000 in donations from the Rotary Club of Richmond which raised the funds from their Brightwater Wine and Food Festival. The big benefactors of this year’s event, held at Middle-Earth Vineyard in February, were presented with cheques at a function at Club Waimea on Monday. It was the 11th time Richmond Rotary has organised the festival which has raised over $250,000 for the community and one of the organising committee Pete Glue says “that’s a great result”. “We raised about the same as last year and that’s with losing a sponsor so we were really pleased,” Pete says. “It means we can donate a good amount to the community which is why we do it.” Pete says this year’s festival had been well supported by the community groups which provided volunteers who helped out on the day. Rotary’s members had also worked hard make the festival a success. “All the sponsors and volunteer groups have come back to us and said ‘count us in for next year’ so we are lucky to have their support. We are also lucky to have a very good committee and members - they worked really hard to make the festival a success.”
The principal benefactors of this year’s festival were Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter ($7500), Brightwater Rural Fire Force ($3000), Wanderers Rugby Club ($2500), Nelson Volunteer Coastguard ($1500), Tasman Cycle Trust ($1500), Brightwater School ($1000) and Richmond Volunteer Fire Brigade ($1000). The helicopter trust’s general manager, Paula Muddle says its very helpful. “We are really appreciative of any donations and this one is very timely because we need to raise $250,000 for as new winch by August.” Brightwater Volunteer Rural Fire Force’s chief fire officer Janti Makan says they will use the donation to help pay for new hand-held radios. The force received the donation after their volunteers helped out with the car parking at this year’s festival. “They have been great supporters of us pretty much from the second or third festival,” he says. “We don’t do it for the money but it is very helpful.” Pete says Rotary donated an additional $2000 to other community groups. The club retained a small percentage of the profits to pay for “smaller community projects during the year” and to cover any unforseen future costs for the event. Next year’s Brightwater Wine and Food Festival will be held on February 21.

Students ready for Rockquest Nelson finals

Jacob Chandler The most talented musical performers from Nelson’s schools will compete in the regional Smokefreerockquest finals this Friday in an effort to earn a place at the nationals finals in Auckland. Eleven Nelson bands made it into the finals after playing at the regional heats on Saturday, as well as soloist Gemma Christall and duo Zeal. Tom Somerville, lead guitarist of Nelson College band ITELO, says the band was stoked to make it into the regional final. “It was great, we did it last year and didn’t make the regional finals so it was nice to get through this year. We had a slightly different lineup this year and we’re tighter as a group.” He says the band will be practising hard in their spare time before going up on stage with a new song at Friday’s event. Smokefreerockquest founder and director Glenn Common, says the real emphasis of the competition is on participation and the experience of performing on stage. “Some entrants will no doubt go on to success in the Kiwi music industry, but for most of the young musicians SFRQ is all about the experience of performing live on stage in a professional set up, meeting others who share their passion for performing music, and getting constructive and impartial feedback from more experienced musicians who are our judges and mentors.” The two top bands from the regional finals will submit a video entry to the national judging pool for selection as national finalists. Stamp collectors show their best Despite the world’s technological advances and changes in the way we do things, one hobby still remains unchanged. The Nelson Philatelic Society showcased an exhibition of stamp collections at their stamp club open day held at Stoke School last weekend. It proved very popular with both young and old collectors, with free stamps given out to children. The society promotes the hobby of stamp collecting and provides information through discussion and demonstration at their monthly meetings. They also invite guest speakers with specialist knowledge and maintain a library for use of members. Kelvin Trower, from Richmond, has been collecting stamps for around 40 years. At the open day,
he displayed a collection of stamps and hand-embroided cards made during World War One that came out of a collection of postcards from a Miss Annie Wells who resided at Tophouse, Blackball and Havelock. “I have been a market gardener all of my life and outside in all sorts of weather. “I only have Sunday afternoons off, so I lock myself inside and work on my stamp collection, it is a real passion that I have,” says Kelvin. Students raise cash for Nepal
Hope School pupils showed they are developing a good social conscience deciding to donate the proceeds from a fundraising barbecue to the victims of the Nepal earthquakes. The pupils initially decided to donate the funds from the barbecue to a pest trapping group in St Arnaud after a school trip to Nelson Lakes earlier in the year. The pupils were so impressed with trapping being carried out by the volunteers
that they wanted to help by donating the $100 they had raised. However, they changed their mind, instead deciding to give the funds to international aid agencies working in Nepal after the 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit the country on April 25. The pupils also organised a coin trail and dress-up day at the school last Wednesday - the same day as a second 7.3 earthquake hit Nepal - to
raise an additional $120 for the earthquake victims “We changed it to Nepal because they need the money more urgently,” pupil Hamish Powell says. “We will raise some more money for the trapping programme at St Arnaud another time.” Principal Dave Pritchard says he has been thrilled with the children “who have been the driving force behind the fundraisers.”

Social Slam This is a social squash league that will start in a few weeks, on Monday nights, from 7pm until 9pm. There are four players in a team who will compete in 25 minute games. The meeting will be located at Club Waimea with admission only available to those with a current Club Waimea membership card. Business will include the annual report, finan-
cial statement, the introduction of directors of the incoming board, appointment of auditor, election of patron, appointment of a welfare officer and the annual subscription. Outdoor Bowls will be holding their annual general meeting on Sunday, June 21, from 3pm. The meeting will be held in the clubhouse, followed by a prize giving and dinner. Caravan Park Club Waimea is proud to offer accommodation as well as entertainment. The club’s caravan park features 64 powered sites, 10 nonpowered sites and is situated in well established grounds. Not only is the Club Waimea caravan park located within walking distance from the Richmond town centre, it’s quiet and secluded, plus, all the perks of Club Waimea are right next door. Wakefield Country Players A 1970s revival of the Country Players in Wakefield has seen 40 years of quality, local entertainment. This year the community theatre group will be embarking on a musical journey through Victorian London in their version of the Charles Dickens Classic, Oliver. Auditions were held last weekend to search for the sixteen strong core cast of children and sixteen supporting adults. Join the community theatre as they tell a story of a young orphan boy searching for acceptance, love and family, and finding along the way, all manner of unruly ruffians. This is the only production the Country Players will be doing this year due to the size of Oliver, and it is the biggest musical show they have done for the last 12 years or so. Director John Amosa is supported by co-musical directors Mel Stewart and Margy Wallace. Oliver will be opening on September
11, and finishing on September 19. Keep an eye out for tickets to this classic and unmissable musical tale. New School Entrant programme proves popular Wakefield School’s transition-to-school programme has taken on a new look with the launch of a learning-through-play programme for preschoolers. The Friday afternoon programme throws open the new entrant classrooms to preschool children of any age and their parents, who can join in with school life and enjoy a wide range of activities with the five year old students. Fiona Morrison and Sonja Lamers of Wakefield Art group with a selection of their art works. Art Group Collage and mixed media was the focus for the Wakefield Art Group as they hosted a workshop run by Sally Barron, on Monday, May 4. Sally began the workshop by relating some of the history of collage, and showed them some art work by popular collage artists. The group then took part in a practical exercise that encouraged them to think about putting together an art work with collage. In small groups they rolled a dice with parts of a face on it, one by one they had to find that body part, putting it all together to create a ‘monster face.’ The exercise was great fun as well as successful in unlocking some artistic juices for their next collage creations. As individuals they worked on their collage with amazing results.
There were landscape pictures of trees, mountains (created in Kandinsky manner) and some reminiscent of Dali. The workshop was a great success and everyone had an excellent and inspiring time. If you’re a beginner, or have never drawn or painted before, come and give it a go in this friendly group. The police are always telling us drivers to slow down on our roads. Do you ever consider the speed with which you live your life? Do you need to slow down a bit? Recently I came across this - a young successful executive was driving his brand new Jaguar through a neighbourhood at more speed than he should have. As he approached some parked cars he slowed in case a child ran out. As he passed the parked cars no child appeared, but a brick came flying out and hit the side of his beautiful Jaguar. He slammed on the brakes and backed up, jumped out and grabbed a kid who was standing there, then backed him up against a car and shouted at him, “what was that all about, and what do you think you’re doing to my car?!” The young boy was apologetic, “Please, mister, please, I am sorry, but I didn’t know what else to do.” He pleaded. “I didn’t know what else to do and no-one else would stop.” With tears running down his face, the boy pointed to a spot around
from one of the parked cars. “It’s my brother,” he said, “he rolled off the kerb and fell out of his wheelchair and I can’t lift him up.” Now sobbing the boy asked the stunned executive, “would you please help me get him back into his wheelchair? He’s hurt and he’s too heavy for me.” Moved beyond words, the executive tried to swallow the rapidly rising lump in his throat. He quickly lifted the boy back into his wheelchair, took out a handkerchief and wiped away the dirt and ascertained he was not really hurt. “Thank you and God bless you,” the grateful child told the stranger. Too shook up for words the man watched the boy push his wheelchair-bound brother down the footpath. As he walked slowly back to his damaged Jaguar, he made a decision never to get it repaired. He kept it as a reminder. Don’t go through life so fast someone has to throw a brick at you to get your attention. God whispers into our souls and speaks to our hearts. Sometimes when we don’t make time to listen He has to throw a brick at us. It’s our choice to listen or not.

Census shows lack of faith Nelson has one of the highest rates of new-age followers in the country, with one expert suggesting the “Nelson lifestyle” is the reason why. But the overall figure is still less than one per cent, just 73 out of every thousand people, according to the 2013 census. Almost half of Nelsonians stated that they had no religion affiliation with 47.5 per cent ticking ‘no religion’ on their census forms, with another 4.89 per cent objecting to answer the question. Loggers raise cash for rescue helicopter Nelson loggers have donated almost $1400 to the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter. Fraser Logging hosts an annual fishing competition in March each year and this year decided to include a charity component. “We always have great support with prizes so we decided to auction a few off and see if we could raise some money for the rescue helicopter,” says organiser of the competition, Mike Green. “We’ve heard they are trying to raise money for a new winch and we appreciate their support of the logging industry, so wanted to help.” He says the fishing competition is held for Fraser Logging employees, associates and sponsors, and they had about 60 attend. In total, they
raised $1380 for the rescue helicopter. General manager of the trust Paula Muddle, says they need to raise $250,000 for a new winch by August this year. “It’s fantastic that a forestry company recognises the service that we provide for them. We have an increasing number of forestry accidents and the terrain is often steep, so a winch is vital to get them out.” Sponsors of the fishing competition were Nelson Weekly, Waimea Weekly, NPD, Komatsu, Richmond Super Liquor, Brightwater Motors, Appleshed Restaurant, Waratah Equipment, Thompson/Fraser Processing, Fraser Logging, Cable Price, UDC Finance, Bays Boating and the Mad Butcher.

Entries are open for the Nelson Mountainbike Club Six-Hour Mid-Winter Breakout race to be held at Rabbit Island on June 21. The format will be the same as previous years with six-hours of racing either as a solo rider or in teams of two, three or four in a variety of categories. Organiser Wayne Pool says it’s an event that is as much about socialising and being part of the “fantastic Nelson mountainbike scene as it is about riding hard for the win”. “A good barbecue and deck chair are compulsory team items,” he says. There will be over $6000 of spot prizes to be won, including four new bikes for one lucky team. The school that enters the most teams will have $250 donated to it to invest in new sports gear. Wolves suffer first rugby league loss There was a big upset in the rugby league last weekend with the Wanderers Wolves losing 38-16 to the Victory Phoenix team. The Wanderers team was on a roll having won five games in a row, however the Victory Phoenix had other intentions with players hitting fine form and combinations starting to gel just at the right time in the competition. There are restrictions on the opponents and both fighters must wear safety gear such as foam-covered boots to ensure no-one gets hurt,” says Andy. There are around 80 black belts living in Nelson and 67 of them, along with senior karate students, watched and supported the four men involved in grading. “It was very inspiring for all and it was a celebration of our practice, karate helps people’s lives. It is about turning them into better people within our community,” says Andy.
Four new black belts were earned at the Seido Karate grading evening held in Nelson last week. Senpais Richard Butler, Zeus Goyone, Daniel Kirby and Jose Perez all gained their Shodan, beginner level black belt. It generally takes around five to eight years, starting from beginner level, to work towards a Seido Karate black belt. Students train two to three times a week. To earn the black belt, students must memorise 15 Katas, which are ancient forms passed down from previous masters, making up their own self-defence techniques and partake in 40, one and a half minute fights against different

It was a clean sweep for Waimea Old Boys with all the club’s teams winning across the senior grades last Saturday. The Star & Garter Waimea Old Boys senior A team led the way, beating Harlequins 78-17 in their Tasman Trophy game at Lansdowne Park in Blenheim. Waimea led 31-10 at the break and eventually scored 12 tries, nine of them converted to retain their unbeaten record.
Waimea half back, Billy Guyton, who returned to club rugby from the Crusaders, made an immediate impact opening the floodgates with the first try after just three minutes. First five Rohan Saifoloi also looked accomplished while wing Viliami Lolohea scored a hat-trick. Captain Ben Homan says the key to the big win was a sustained 80 minute performance and good ball retention. “It was the first time we have managed to
put an 80-minute performance together. We have been struggling in the second half of our games but maintained the intensity for the full 80 on Saturday. “I was also pleased with our width and our ball retention was a lot better. That allowed us to recycle the ball and build some phases.” Ben says team is looking forward to taking a well-deserved rest with a bye this week. “There are some sore bodies at the moment so the bye is good timing. The boys
have been hanging out for a break.” Waimea leads the Tasman Trophy on standings with 44 points, well clear of Wanderers on 33 and Central on 31. In other matches, the senior women’s team came away with two convincing wins while Waimea Old Boys under-19 team thrashed the Stoke under-18 team 55-0.

Waimea Old Boys’ division two side left it late at Murchison on Saturday, scoring a late penalty goal and try to overcome the hosts, 13-12. Murchison looked to have done enough to win the game with ten minutes to go when Waimea kicked a penalty goal to bring them within six points. Murchison were then unlucky not to score a try of their own with a knock on metres from the tryline costing the hosts a handy lead minutes from time. Waimea then worked their way down the other end of the field and replacement prop Tim Hikuroa dived over for the match-winning try. The win keeps Waimea on top of the Car Company division two competition. “It was bloody tough,” says coach Wayne Bateman. “We were short on numbers, we only had 18 and we were rapt because they played for 80 minutes.” The experience of Tim and Andrew Martin helped us out. They had cool heads and helped us make good decisions. Wanderers also had a good win but, in contrast to the Waimea senior B team, cruised home beating Rangers 72-3.

Richmond out-shoot, out-class Suburban Carol Cook Goal attack Annie Ewers shouldered a hefty workload for her Richmond Sleepers team when they faced Suburban Black in their Grade 3 club netball encounter at Saxton Stadium on Saturday. Richmond began smartly when they scored from their first centre pass, converted a turnover, and scored on their own. Suburban replied with three of their own to tie the score and the game looked to have the makings of a battle royale. Richmond had considerably more possession despite the close attention of the hard working goal defence Myra Abbot who pulled in a couple of well-timed intercepts. Richmond went into the first break with an 8–5 advantage. Suburban reshuffled their defensive lineup with Myra moving back to goal keep, Desiree Stewart to goal defence and Claire Hodgman to wing defence. The changes slowed the ball through court and lessened Richmond’s scoring opportunities. The spoils were shared in the second period and the score was 14-11 at the major break in favour of Richmond. The second half well and truly belonged to Richmond as they outclassed Suburban in all facets of play when they powered away to out-

score their opposites 17-6. It was Richmond who came out firing with Annie to the fore as she came off the line well, and worked hard to reach the circle to gain the optimum shot. Suburban were practically starved of possession in their offensive third with a miserly four attempts at goal, and were denied the second opportunity by some great rebounding by Lauren Mills. Kelsey Biggs was introduced at wing defence and it was her sterling efforts which applied pressure around the circle edge which allowed Lauren to pounce on any loose ball. Jenna French was Richmond’s pivotal link through court and she was a demon for the tip ball. She was well supported by wing attack, Shara Higgins who worked tirelessly to deliver quality ball to their shooters. Suburban shooters Hayley Turner and Angela Miller were not too far off the pace in the shooting averages with a combined 59 per cent compared to Richmond’s 62 per cent however it was Richmond’s pure volume of shots (21 more attempts) which put paid to the blue team’s chances.
